Protecting Life? New Bill Says Its OK to Let Women... →
They want to “protect life” so much that they have written into the bill a new amendment that would override the requirement that emergency room doctors save every patient, regardless of status or ability to pay. The law would carve out an exception for pregnant women; doctors and hospitals will be allowed to let pregnant women die if interventions to save them will kill the fetus. [+]

I’ve written in the past about the Number Needed to Treat (NNT). I think it’s one of the most important metrics we have in medicine to determine the efficacy of a modern medical intervention at the population level. I would even suggest that drugs should be approved by the…

– This is how healthcare needs to be run. It needs to be orders of magnitude simpler. I’ve gotten all kinds of random letters for months about the Vermont state health insurance I’ve signed up for. It’s rather confusing. When I finally talk to someone, I have to wait 3 months to get...

compostable pens
Packs of compostable pens have been popping up at grocery stores around here lately. At first I thought, “nice, one less disposable plastic item.” Which is true, but here’s the rub:
they’re not radically re-thinking pens. The ideal pen is made from metal or wood and has replaceable ink. The ink is really the only thing that wears out, not the whole pen.
The other...

The World After Abundance →
I think he relies on history a little too much in this article. As if modern technology means absolutely nothing and things still happen on the same time scale. However, I agree with a lot of things said here and seems to validate my idea for a wall surrounding vermont (or would that just be a huge waste of energy?). I don’t know what what’s his name draws issue with with the house...

oops
At the risk of looking like a total idiot, I’m going to be totally honest. I miss-read the page which explains the deadline to get candidate forms in. For some reason I thought I had all summer.
I decided to be honest about this because I feel like normal politicians who make dumb mistakes would try and cover up their tracks. Pretend it didn’t happen. Start lying. And I don’t...

Hello folks
I get a lot of questions like, ‘how’s the campaign going?’ I don’t really know what to say. Most of the campaign work I’ve been doing is trying to think of solutions. I guess when I decided to run for governor, I thought I knew what needed to be done to make the world sustainable. If I were to be elected I would just implement all those ideas.
But now I’m...

Thinking
I’ve been thinking a lot about what Derrick jensen says about the necessary importation of resources being unsustainable. I decided I don’t actually disagree with him. He’s defining cities as always growing. Maybe then, is he saying for growth to plateau would require a total shift in perspective which people aren’t capable of. Sure cities can’t grow forever (unless...
New idea
So, assuming the world doesn’t get its shit together and have a total change of heart/mindset and become totally sustainable, maybe we in Vermont can have our own little sustainable nation (unless of course the entire biosphere is shot to shit in which case we’re all fucked anyway). So I think our best bet is to separate from the US and build a giant wall around Vermont to protect against the...

Sustainable Local Agriculture
Vermont needs to achieve a truly sustainable local agriculture. This means growing as much of our food locally as possible, not putting family farms out of business. One way to encourage this will be to require anyone receiving food stamps to only purchase local food. A food backed currency is also something that I would look into instating.
